The Scrabble Challenge
The YMCA Literacy Initiative held its 4th annual Scrabble Challenge fundraiser on June 1 at the Central Family YMCA. Over seventy-five people enjoyed two rounds of tournament play, door prizes, a cash raffle and refreshments. The ultimate goal of the event was to raise funds in order to sustain the Literacy Initiative in its mission to continue serving the educational needs of adults in Forsyth County. The Literacy Initiative is particularly grateful for the event sponsors, which include the Winston-Salem Journal, BB&T, WBFJ, Hanesbrands, and Coca-cola. For more information about the Scrabble Challenge or the Literacy Initiative, please call Ellen Gallimore at 727-9852.

Parkland High School Hispanic Achievers
Hispanic Achievers Banquet 2008
The annual Hispanic Achievers Recognition Banquet was held on Friday May 16th at East Forsyth High School. The event brought together over 100 Hispanic Achievers and their families to celebrate their success and to thank the Adult Achievers that committed their time to mentoring these young people. Eddie Hernandez from Modern Automotive Network challenged the students to complete their education, set high goals and strive to reach them. The goal of Hispanic Achievers is to address the growing drop-out rate for Hispanic/Latinos by reaching out to English as a Second Language (ESL) high school students. Program participants come from East Forsyth, North Forsyth, Parkland and Reynolds High Schools. There are nearly 175 students in this growing program and it is meeting a critical community need. For more information about the Hispanic Achievers, please contact Daisy Rodriguez at 722-9772.
