Literacy Initiative

Quick Facts

  • More than 20% of adults in Forsyth County read below the fifth grade level. The social and economic impact of iliteracy affects the entire community.

  • Literacy Initiative offers volunteer tutor workshops throughout the year, in which we train volunteers to tutor nonreaders, low-level readers, and English-as-a-second language students.

  • Once trained, volunteer tutors meet with their students twice a week for an hour and thirty minutes per session.

  • YMCA Literacy Initiative has worked for 17 years to improve the lives of community members through education programs designed to help adults improve their reading, English, and life skills.

  • Since its inception in 1990, the Literacy Initiative has served over 900 individuals in need of literacy services.
