Adult Literacy

Ronnie, a Literacy Initiative Adult Basic Education student, recently graduated from the program. He was tutored over 450 hours, and improved his reading ability from the very lowest level of proficiency to reading on a high school level. Additionally, he has greatly improved his computer skills and financial skills, and his confidence level has improved by leaps and bounds. When Ronnie first came to the program, he told us that he had struggled with reading and had tried to avoid it his entire life. He now spends time reading whenever he has an opportunity, including during his lunch breaks at work. Ronnie’s plans for the future include enrolling in classes at Forsyth Tech.

Dennis, a longtime Literacy Initiative participant, recently stepped up his efforts to improve his reading. He and his tutor extended their meeting time, adding an extra half hour to each tutoring session. As a result of his efforts, he improved his post-test score by ten points, which is a wonderful leap forward. Also, Dennis has learned how to correctly write a check. He is also proud of being able to read the names of the books of the Bible without having to ask for assistance.
